Akutrak 1 MM Phono Stage

The Akutrak Moving Magnet phono stage goes further than simply amplifying your signal — it actively corrects the non-flat frequency response inherent in all MM cartridges. To date, by design, all amplifiers are intentionally flat response devices. They take the input and amplify it unchanged. This includes 100% of phono stages. And that's where they get it wrong.

Why? Cartridges are tiny, electro-mechanical devices and although the signal in the groove is laid down to precise rules, you only have to look at all the response curves to see just how difficult a job it is to get a truly flat response that would be true to the original sound. When you use a linear amplifier on a non-flat signal, you'll just get the same non-flat response out, only bigger. That is NOT what you want. Against the master tape, the sound the recording engineer is hearing, this can be heard easily.
