03 RECOMMENDED PATH

Upgrade order of priority

Our recommended sequence for maximum return on investment.

  1. Isolation

    Vibration contamination affects every component above it in the playback chain. Remove it first and all other improvements become easier to hear.

  2. Turntable mat

    The stock mat on most turntables adds coloration and reflections. An Achromat is acoustically transparent and significantly improves clarity.

  3. Tonearm

    The tonearm controls the cartridge's relationship with the groove. A better arm reduces resonance, improves tracking, and extracts more information.

  4. Cartridge

    Once the platform is optimised, a better cartridge can realise its full potential — often performing well above its price point in an upgraded system.

Common questions

What is the most impactful turntable upgrade I can make?

In most systems, isolation provides the most dramatic improvement per pound spent. After that, a new turntable mat (particularly the Achromat) removes a significant source of sonic coloration. Tonearm and cartridge upgrades deliver the highest absolute performance gains.

Will these upgrades work with my existing turntable?

Most Funk Firm products are designed as universal upgrades. Isolation products work with any deck. The Achromat is available in multiple sizes to fit almost any platter. Tonearms require a compatible armboard or headshell fitting — contact us if you need advice.

Do I need to upgrade my cartridge at the same time?

Not necessarily. In fact, improving your tonearm and isolation first will let your existing cartridge perform significantly better. This is often a more cost-effective route than immediately replacing the cartridge.

Are these upgrades reversible?

Most upgrades are non-destructive and fully reversible. Isolation products simply sit under the turntable feet. Mats are a simple swap. Tonearm upgrades require more commitment but do not damage the original deck.
